PRESS RELEASE
Moore Honoured To Serve In The Cabinet As Secretary Of State For Scotland
Michael Moore MP
01-Jun-2010
Borders MP Michael Moore has said he is ‘very honoured’ to be asked to join the cabinet as the Secretary of State for Scotland.
The Prime Minister asked Mr Moore to join the government at the weekend following the resignation of David Laws MP, who has been replaced at the Treasury by Danny Alexander MP, the previous Scottish Secretary.
Mr Moore said:
I am very sorry that David has left the government and I do hope that he will be able to re-join it at an early opportunity. He is an enormously talented and committed politician who quickly showed his abilities in a very demanding role.
These are sad circumstances in which to enter government, but I am very honoured to be asked to serve by the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. I am very conscious of the responsibilities placed upon me and the challenges we face at a time of real economic difficulties and serious problems facing the government’s finances.
At the end of last week we heard the dreadful news about the demise of Peter Scott & Co in Hawick. I have spent a lot of time over the past few days talking to people who have been affected, the Administrators at KPMG and local agencies who are there to provide support.
My new role will be very challenging and I look forward to that. But I will not be losing sight of my job as the Member of Parliament for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.
